NODE ART

NODE ART is NODE’s first major research project. The project has established groundbreaking knowledge and expertise in tribology/corrosion. The project’s results can lead to significant cost reductions in drilling rig operation.

The NODE ART project is drawing to a close. The project’s task has been to develop a new generation of cylinders and drill equipment adapted to deepwater drilling in both Arctic and tropical regions. It is also developing new materials, surface treatments and cylinder concepts based on new, lightweight materials such as composites.

The project has many partners. These are Aker Solutions, National Oilwell Varco, UMOE Mandal, Elkem Research, Xtrata Nickel, Rexroth (NED), StatoilHydro, the University of Agder (UiA) and NTNU. The project includes provision for three doctoral students through close cooperation with the University of Agder and NTNU. The project is financed by the participants in collaboration with Norges forskningsråd (the Norwegian Research Council), among others.

The project has established groundbreaking expertise and knowledge in tribology/corrosion, and developed alternative technologies using composite materials. Some of the project’s results are:

  • Alternative technologies have been developed using composite materials. This solution can give significant reductions in dynamic loads, as well as great benefits linked to reduced corrosion.
  • Additionally, the project has made very interesting measurements of dynamic loads during operations in Arctic regions. This knowledge/expertise provides important feedback to operators and constructors for use at great ocean depths and in Arctic operations.
  • The project has established groundbreaking expertise and knowledge in tribology/corrosion, and has been a factor in the building of an internationally renowned research environment at NTNU/Sintef.
  • We have funded three doctoral students who will soon complete their PhDs in areas such as corrosion/wear and dynamic properties.
  • One result of this project was the establishment of Umoe Mandal Advanced Composites in 2007
